Red Sky by Susan Pearson

Red Sky was in my peat hills series of paintings.  When I studied the hills in Shetland I liked the dramatic purples of the heather and peat.  I used torn paper and thick acrylic paint with a palette knife to create a textured background and began adding colour to the picture.  It was summer and I only seemed to get a chance to paint just as the sun was setting, when my children were in bed, so it became as much about the swirling colours in the sky as the shapes and colours of the peat banks.  Here are some examples of Shetland sunsets.
